the mask dance

in ancient Bali masks are something sacred. Even up the modern time some particular masks are blessed in religious ceremony and some mask carvers are still looking for a "good" day to carve and of course, some dancer still do the blessing ceremony before they use the mask to dance. It is believed that the mask has mystic power that influence their performance.
Masks or topeng are they called can be made from wood or fabric that are transform into various shapes such as Gods and Goddesses, human faces, animals, demons, etc. The masks dance in Bali. Take stories from ancient tales or epics. Some mask cover the whole of the dancer's face while some only cover half. Some of the dances have dialogs and some routines. The dialog use to be spoken only in ancient traditional Balinese language but now the dancer's mixed the language with Bahasa Indonesia even the English to better communicate with the audience.
Each mask represents a character and the routine and the dialog strengthen the audiences belief in the caracter. Depending on the story, the dance van be done by one person or even a group of dancer.
